Mountain Secondary is an important step to help meet the needs of a fast‑growing community and ensuring families have access to important school facilities right in their neighbourhoods.”
Supporting Langley students
Students at R.E. Mountain Secondary will benefit from modern learning spaces, improving the quality of education and daily school experience. The addition will include new classrooms as well as specialty learning spaces, creating more opportunities for students to select electives, such as art and cooking, that further support their learning and growth.
The Province is investing approximately $42 million in the addition.
“Families in Langley are part of a growing community, and students need space to learn and thrive,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care. “This new addition will create 300 more seats and help meet rising enrolment in Willoughby. It also means more access to modern classrooms and learning spaces. We are making sure students have the tools they need today, while building strong school communities for the future.”
Features of the addition
The new three-storey addition will include:
- new special-education spaces to support students with diverse needs
- seven general instruction classrooms
- a media and technology room, art room, culinary lab, two general science rooms and a computer room, enabling the school to expand elective options for students
- a designated dropoff and pickup area
- designing the addition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 82% and increasing energy efficiency
- new parking spots for future charging stations for electric vehicles
“As we welcome more new families to our community, we know that this addition will help alleviate enrolment pressures and ensure students, now and in the future, can continue to learn in a healthy, safe and inclusive environment in Langley,” said Candy Ashdown, chair, Langley Board of Education.
Construction on the new addition is anticipated to start in summer 2027 and be ready for students in late 2028.
