People in northern B.C. will have greater protection from wildfires through a provincial investment in a series of community-led projects.

The B.C. government has provided more than $490,000 in grants to five local governments and one First Nation in the Northwest Fire Centre to support wildfire-risk-reduction initiatives and help keep communities safe.

Land impacted by the suppression of the Torkelsen wildfire in 2018, including fireguards constructed to help slow the fire’s spread, has been rehabilitated.

Mark and Pauline Adamson are being recognized by the Province through the Minister’s Award for Innovation and Excellence in Woodlot Management for the North and for being the top provincial performer.

Strong winds in the Cassiar Fire Zone on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019, prompted increased fire activity and caused two of the more prominent wildfires within the Northwest Fire Centre to grow.  

The BC Wildfire Service expects that wildfires burning in the Cassiar Fire Zone will become more active today, Aug. 13, 2019, due to strong winds in the region. This wind pattern is forecasted to continue until Friday, Aug. 16, 2019.
