Niki Sharma, Attorney General, and Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, have released the following statements in response to the introduction of new, proposed Criminal Code amendments and public safety commitments by the federal government:

A death-review panel convened by the BC Coroners Service has issued a report that includes recommendations to reduce deaths by suicide and better support young people in British Columbia.

The BC Coroners Service advises that the inquest into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Janet Nguyen, Christopher Duong, Alexander Duong and Harlan Duong has been further postponed due to ongoing BCGEU and PEA job action.

More police officers will be trained at the Justice Institute of British Columbia’s (JIBC) police academy with a 50% expansion of seats, supporting local police recruitment and building safe communities.

According to preliminary data, 153 people in July and 149 people in August 2025 died due to unregulated drug toxicity, as reported by the BC Coroners Service.

Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has released the following statement in response to seven people being charged in relation to extortion investigations this week:

The inquest into the deaths of Janet Nguyen, Christopher Duong, and Alexander and Harlan Duong, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, has been postponed due to ongoing BCGEU and PEA job action.

A coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Matthew Scott Causton is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12 through to Friday, Nov. 21, 2025.
