Grant's Law:
- On February 1, 2008, Grant's Law came into effect.
- It was the first mandatory gas pre-payment regulation in Canada.
- To date, there has been very high compliance by employers and Grant's Law has virtually eliminated gas-and-dash thefts in B.C.
- In Vancouver, for example, the number of gas-and-dash incidents dropped from 161 in 2007 to zero in 2012.
Working Alone or in Isolation Regulations:
- Also on February 1, 2008, the Working Alone or in Isolation regulations came into effect.
- However, concerns were raised by many employers about the practicality of the late night requirements.
- After an extensive consultation with both employees and employers, a third option was announced in November 2011 and came in effect on April 15, 2012.
- WorkSafeBC did not remove the first two safety options. Rather, they added a third option that involves a comprehensive list of 12 mandatory requirements and procedures.
- These requirements include enhanced video monitoring, person-check systems, use of time-lock safes, enhanced visibility and rigorous bi-annual independent audits to ensure compliance. In addition, a worker assigned to work late night hours must be at least 19 years of age.
- After the regulations came into effect, WorkSafeBC conducted targeted inspections on late night operations to ensure compliance with the regulation.
- Ninety-five per cent of the inspected locations were in compliance. For those who weren't, corrective orders were written to bring them into compliance.
