Year of Science extends contest deadline

VICTORIA - The Year of Science has extended the "Choose Science, Go Far, Win Big" contest deadline to April 30, 2011, with the ultimate goal of awarding one innovative student with a $25,000 scholarship.

Extending the deadline ensures B.C. youth have the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and enthusiasm for science. Year of Science encourages all B.C. students to brainstorm innovative ideas for science experiments, inventions or methods and submit a video detailing their question or idea. The payoff could be a scholarship to pursue the science education of their dreams.

Three of six semi-finalists have already been chosen, and two of their ideas tested. So far, we've discovered that human hair is strong enough to support the weight of a human body, but if you want to use an electric eel to power your iPod, it's going to take awhile - more than three years!

Based on the popular TV show, MythBusters, the Year of Science video contest asks young people to upload videos of their ideas for science experiments or myths to be tested. All entries can be submitted to a dedicated Year of Science YouTube channel at: http://www.youtube.com/yearofsciencebc

Quote:

Dr. Moira Stilwell, Parliamentary Secretary for Industry, Research and Innovation to the Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation -

"The contest entries we have received are a testament to the innovative spirit of B.C. youth. The goal of the Year of Science is to raise awareness of the endless career possibilities that an interest and education in science can lead to. What better way to inspire young minds about scientific discovery than through a contest that rewards them for their original and innovative ideas?"

Quick Facts:

* The contest is open to B.C. residents.

* Videos can be submitted to the Year of Science contest page hosted on YouTube.

* Winning entries will be chosen by a panel of judges based on enthusiasm, originality and ability to carry out the idea as an experiment.

* Six semi-finalists will each win a science-related prize package valued at $250.

* The grand prize of a $25,000 scholarship will be awarded in June 2011.
