Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell released the following statement in support of the federal government's participation in the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade talks:

"Although there are significant economic challenges around the world, our government's strong fiscal management ensures B.C is a safe harbour for investment across the globe. It is with great optimism that B.C. looks to increasing trade wherever possible to boost investment and create jobs here at home in British Columbia.

"Our government's BC Jobs Plan has made it a clear that export growth is critically important to the economy in British Columbia and Canada. It's very encouraging to see the federal government putting more emphasis on increasing trade with the Asia-Pacific region. Since the introduction of the BC Jobs Plan, we've seen increases in trade and job growth, but we believe the best is yet to come.

"Canada's participation in the TPP negotiations is a historic opportunity for British Columbia. Improved trade, investment and labour mobility with the members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership are vital parts of the provincial government's vision for economic growth and job creation for British Columbians.

"British Columbians can rest assured that these developments will keep our province's economic momentum going and create and protect jobs in every region of B.C. - from millworkers in Mackenzie and port workers in Prince Rupert, to high technology producers on Vancouver Island and oil and gas workers in the Peace region.

"Last year, our province's domestic exports of goods to the nine original and negotiating members of the TPP were $14.7 billion, or 45 per cent of B.C.'s worldwide exports. The announcement that the federal government intends to strengthen trade relationships with the TPP will only have positive effects on these numbers and will continue to support a growing economy in B.C. and across Canada."
