Road safety in the Port Alberni area gets an upgrade this summer, with over $350,000 in improvements to Redford Street and to sections of Highway 4.

In Port Alberni, the shoulders on the Port Alberni Highway/Redford Street will be widened to add cycling lanes. This will make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians and improve access through the city's core. This project, valued at $250,000, is scheduled for completion in September.

On Highway 4, in the Kennedy Lake area west of Port Alberni, cycle fencing will be installed on the top of the newly restored retaining walls. This higher fencing offers additional protection for cyclists in an area with steep roadside drop-offs. The fencing is scheduled to be complete by the end of October.

Centreline rumble strips will be added to Highway 4 between Qualicum and Port Alberni to reduce vehicle centreline crossovers. These will be installed by the end of August. Motorists on Highway 4 will also benefit from enhanced delineation, helping drivers see the road better during adverse weather conditions.

These projects are part of $5 million invested this year by the government of British Columbia for safety projects in and near B.C. communities, to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on provincial highways.

This work supports the government of B.C.'s 'Families First' agenda by improving road safety. British Columbia has an expansive highway system that connects families across every region of the province, and ensuring these highways are as safe as possible is essential.
