Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister John Rustad today placed British Columbia's Reconciliation Week Proclamation in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) Bentwood Box.

The placing of the proclamation in the Bentwood Box is a reconciliation gesture on behalf of the provincial government.

B.C.'s proclamation of Sept. 16-22, 2013, as Reconciliation Week acknowledges the important work of Reconciliation Canada and the TRC, as well as the injustices and harm experienced by the survivors of Indian Residential Schools, the affected families, and the need for continued healing.

The Bentwood Box, steamed and bent from a single piece of red cedar, reflects the strength and resilience of survivors and families. The TRC is transporting the box to all of its national events throughout Canada.

In each province and territory visited, offerings are made to commemorate personal journeys toward healing and reconciliation. The box eventually will be housed in the National Research Centre at the University of Manitoba.
