Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health for Seniors Linda Larson has issued the following statement today in recognition of World Alzheimer's Day:
"There are more than 70,000 British Columbians currently living with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia and almost 10,000 of those individuals are under the age of 65. These are our friends, our family members and our neighbours."
"World Alzheimer's Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about this degenerative and irreversible disorder and a perfect time for British Columbians to learn more about the resources and support available for patients, their families and caregivers."
"Alzheimer's disease will eventually impact how a person thinks, feels, acts and reacts to their environment. This can sometimes be misunderstood as symptoms of depression or even as normal signs of aging."
"Because the symptoms of Alzheimer's can progress very slowly, it is often a very confusing and painful time for both the patient, their family members and friends who are witness to the slow decline of their loved one. By raising awareness and learning more about the symptoms, signs and progression of Alzheimer's, diagnosed individuals can be better supported to remain active, engaged and important members of their communities."
"Government is committed to investing in programs and services that support families affected by this disease. To learn more about the Province's Dementia Action Plan, please visit: www.health.gov.bc.ca/library/publications/year/2012/dementia-action-plan.pdf"
"As Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors, I would like to encourage all British Columbians to take some time today to learn more about Alzheimer's and dementia and how you can help to support the individuals and their families who are currently facing this heart-breaking disease."
