VICTORA - Health Minister Terry Lake issued the following statement today in recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month:
"Diabetes Awareness Month is an opportunity to reflect on the impact this disease has on over 370,000 British Columbians.
"To support those with diabetes, our government has a variety of programs and services that provide guidance and care for those diagnosed with the disease. HealthLink BC provides tools to help diabetics better manage their own care. HealthLink BC also includes information about over 300 diabetic clinics and education programs across the province many with a focus on specific communities such as First Nations, seniors and children.
"Close to 3,000 children and youth are living with diabetes in British Columbia. Insulin pumps help young patients better manage their disease and B.C.'s PharmaCare program covers the cost of insulin pumps and pump supplies for those age 18 and younger.
"PharmaCare also covers 14 effective therapies for the treatment and management of diabetes, including the cost of needles, syringes and blood glucose test strips.
"British Columbians can take steps to reduce the effects of diabetes by leading a healthy and active lifestyle. Our government's Healthy Families BC strategy encourages healthy choices as part of a successful diabetes management strategy.
"By providing access to high-quality, specialized care and promoting the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, we are helping British Columbians with diabetes lead healthier and better lives."
