The Nisga'a Final Agreement Implementation Report 2011/12 is now available, providing information on the continued implementation of British Columbia's first modern treaty.
The 2011/12 report includes activities and reports on progress in the following implementation areas: Nisga'a Culture and Heritage, Nisga'a Education, the Nisga'a Economy, Communications and Intergovernmental Relations, Nisga'a Programs and Services, and financial reporting of the Nisga'a Lisims Government.
In 2010, the Nisga'a Nation celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Nisga'a Final Agreement, which came into effect on May 11, 2000. This is the first treaty in British Columbia to provide constitutional certainty in respect to an Aboriginal people's right to self-government and was negotiated outside the B.C. Treaty Commission process.
Five treaties have been fully ratified in B.C.: the Nisga'a Final Agreement, the Tsawwassen First Nation Final Agreement, the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, the Yale First Nation Final Agreement and the Tla'amin Final Agreement.
In June 2013, Canada passed legislation to ratify the Yale First Nation Final Agreement and in June 2014, Canada passed legislation to ratify the Tla'amin Final Agreement. Both are scheduled to come into effect in April 2016.
