The Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement Implementation Report 2012/13 is now available, providing information on the continued implementation of Vancouver Island's first modern treaty.
The 2012/13 report covers the activities and progress of the Parties in implementing the treaty in these areas: Maa-nulth First Nations Lands and Resources, Fisheries, Governance, and Financial Matters. It also outlines specific activities undertaken by each of the five Maa-nulth First Nations: Huu-ay-aht First Nations, Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k'tles7et'h' First Nations (pronounced Ka-yu-ket/Chek-le-set), Toquaht Nation, Uchucklesaht Tribe and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (pronounced You-thloo-ith-at).
The Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement came into effect on April 1, 2011. As well as being the first modern treaty on Vancouver Island, it is the first multi-nation treaty negotiated under the B.C. Treaty Commission process.
Five treaties have been fully ratified in British Columbia: the Nisga'a Final Agreement, the Tsawwassen First Nation Final Agreement, the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, the Yale First Nation Final Agreement and the Tla'amin Final Agreement.
In June 2013, Canada passed legislation to ratify the Yale First Nation Final Agreement and in June 2014, Canada passed legislation to ratify the Tla'amin Final Agreement. Both are scheduled to come into effect in April, 2016.
