Health Minister Terry Lake has issued the following statement in recognition of the Terry Fox Run and that September is cancer awareness month for childhood, ovarian, prostate and men’s cancers:
“On September 14th, people of all ages will celebrate the life and vision of Terry Fox and raise awareness for cancer at Terry Fox Runs in communities throughout the province. Thanks to brave individuals like Terry Fox who brought awareness to this disease, we now know so much more about different types of cancers and their treatments.
“Cancer has physical, emotional and mental effects on those touched by the diagnosis including their families and loved ones who surround them. Receiving this news is stressful and leaves fears and questions about why it happened, what happens next and what care is available.
“September is cancer awareness month for childhood, ovarian, prostate and men’s cancers. I’m joining with cancer advocates around the province - and all those participating in a Terry Fox Run this weekend - to help raise awareness and encourage the ground-breaking research being done in B.C. to reduce the devastating impact of this disease.
“Our government continues to partner with health authorities, associations and specialists in the field to provide supports that patients need. The substantial investments we make each year have led to innovative, leading-edge cancer care and research resulting in some of the best cancer survival rates in the country.
“No one fights cancer alone. It takes a support system of family, friends, health-care professionals and caregivers to help those affected by the disease through this difficult and uncertain time. I encourage everyone to get involved in spreading awareness and providing support in ways big or small. We can all do our part − every little bit counts.
“For all those who are facing cancer, your bravery and strength is inspiring. Our government will continue to work toward even better care and outcomes and look forward to a day when this disease no longer exists.”
