Health Minister Terry Lake issued the following statement in recognition of World Cancer Day:
“World Cancer Day is not only an opportunity to raise awareness about cancer prevention; it’s a chance to recognize the dedicated health professionals who work to continuously improve all aspects of cancer care. The theme of World Cancer Day 2015 is Not Beyond Us, a reminder that effective solutions to preventing, detecting and treating cancer are within our reach.
“British Columbians can be proud of our province’s leadership in cancer prevention and treatment. This province has some of the best cancer survival rates in the world and the lowest overall incidence rate for almost all types of cancers in Canada.
“Much of this success is thanks to the work of the BC Cancer Agency, which provides world-class cancer care at six regional care centres throughout the province. These centres work closely with health authorities to provide a wide range of cancer services at the community level to ensure patients are supported as close to home as possible. I have seen first-hand how the staff at the BC Cancer Agency, from leadership to the front lines, are making a difference in the lives of cancer patients every day.
“From comprehensive cervical, colorectal and mammography screening programs to supportive patient care that includes counselling, nutritional assessment, survivorship and end-of-life care, the BC Cancer Agency provides the highest quality services throughout the patient journey.
“A growing and aging population means that the BC Cancer Agency’s services will be even more in-demand in the coming years. The BC Cancer Agency continues to develop care models that will allow for the treatment of more patients, while maintaining the high level of quality cancer care B.C. is known for.
“I’d like to thank the over 3,000 employees and over 700 volunteers of the BC Cancer Agency who work to bring hope to cancer patients throughout British Columbia and beyond.”
