British Columbia is working in partnership with the Wuikinuxv, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xaixais, Gitga’at, and Metlakatla First Nations toward the goal of establishing the cleanest LNG industry in the world.
This collaborative relationship is enhanced by the signing of the Coastal First Nations LNG Benefits Agreement which commits B.C. to addressing economic benefits and environmental impacts associated with LNG development.
The Province has committed to work with Coastal First Nations on environmental safety and stewardship, air-shed impacts, greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, skills training and employment projects. The agreement delivers base funding of $1.5 million annually over three years and further funding is available based on the number of LNG projects proceeding to final investment decision and LNG export.
The agreement complements impact benefit agreements between industry and First Nations, as well as other agreements between B.C. and First Nations associated with LNG-related development. The Coastal First Nations LNG Benefits Agreement also provides greater certainty to proponents prior to making their final investment decisions on LNG projects.
Coastal First Nations have previously provided input on benchmarks for LNG plant emissions and two air-shed studies related to proposed LNG facilities development in the Kitimat and Prince Rupert areas. Coastal First Nations continue to be involved with British Columbia, Canada and industry in discussions regarding marine shipping.
