Pacific NorthWest LNG Project — Historic agreement with First Nations strengthens environmental protection

The Pacific NorthWest LNG Project is a proposed natural gas liquefaction and export facility on Lelu Island within the District of Port Edward, British Columbia. The project was approved by the Government of Canada on Sept. 27, 2016, and by British Columbia in 2014.

In addition to the strong environmental protections required through regulatory conditions, the Environmental Monitoring Agreement is an additional opportunity for the federal and provincial governments to work with First Nations to protect the environment while supporting the development of the liquefied natural gas industry, specifically the Pacific NorthWest LNG Project.

The Environmental Monitoring Committee will consist of one senior representative each from the Lax Kw'alaams Band and Metlakatla First Nation, and one senior representative each from the governments of British Columbia and Canada.

It will be co-chaired through a rotating chair function. A federal secretariat will be established.

The purpose of the committee will be to ensure that oversight of environmental and compliance monitoring, management plans and follow-up program requirements is undertaken in a coordinated and collaborative manner.
