Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, has issued the following statement in recognition of Midwives Day, May 5, 2024:
"On this day, we honour the invaluable role midwives play in our health-care system and the exceptional care they provide to growing families throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period.
“Midwives play a crucial role in our health-care system. They deliver more than 25% of all babies born annually in B.C., and provide personalized, holistic care to families throughout the province, including those in rural, remote and First Nations communities. This means families can count on effective and culturally safe care throughout pregnancy, as well as during and after childbirth.
“To better support midwives and help grow the profession, a three-year agreement was ratified between the Province and the Midwives Association of British Columbia last year, retroactive to April 2022. This agreement provides midwives with long-term support for their career advancement, ensuring that more pregnant people can benefit from their services.
“In addition, by implementing B.C.'s Health Human Resources Strategy, we are actively working to retain, recruit and train additional midwives. This effort aims to ensure more expanding families can access the care, comfort and support offered by midwives.
“On behalf of the provincial government, I would like to express my gratitude to midwives for their significant contributions and unwavering dedication to their clients.”
