Facts about pharmacy investigations, prescribed alternatives

  • The number of people in B.C. on prescribed alternatives peaked at almost 5,200 patients in March 2023, and decreased to fewer than 3,900 in December 2024.
  • The dispensed quantity of prescribed alternative hydromorphone tablets is down 34% since 2023.
  • Pharmacy kickbacks occur when pharmacies offer cash payments or exchanges to clients for having their prescriptions filled at a certain pharmacy.
  • In 2016, the B.C. College of Pharmacists enacted a bylaw prohibiting pharmacies from offering inducements on the purchase of any prescription medication, prescribed medical device or supplies, or for pharmacy services.
  • The Province’s Special Investigation Unit at the Ministry of Health is made up of former police officers who continue to hold the status of special constable.
  • More than 1,500 pharmacies are operating in B.C.
