Toquaht Nation and Uchucklesaht Tribe members on the west coast of Vancouver Island will have safer access to their communities with new improvements coming to forest service roads.

The legislation that recognizes the Haida Nation’s Aboriginal title throughout Haida Gwaii received royal assent in the B.C. legislature on Thursday, May 16, 2024.

First Nations governments financially challenged by the pandemic and natural disasters will benefit from a one-time provincial grant that makes up for the loss of shared gaming revenues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crews are set to start work on the upgrades to Admirals Road between Hallowell Road and Maple Bank Road that will improve safety and access for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. 

More than 600 members of the Tsimshian First Nations are benefitting from courses ranging from driver’s training and essential skills upgrading to environmental monitoring, trades training and other job-related education programs delivered close to home.

As part of the Provincial Domestic Violence Plan, the Province is investing more than $1.5 million to continue to expand and strengthen supports for those affected by domestic violence in B.C.
