British Columbia government invests $2.7 million for Aboriginal training

Through a $2.7-million investment from the Aboriginal Skills Training Development Fund, the following courses will be provided to 188 participants from the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Kwikwetlem First Nations. 

ArrowMight:

This unique home-study option offers accelerated learning to reach functional literacy for the modern Canadian economy.

Essential Skills:

This course is a standardized program designed from Skillplan BC. It incorporates reading, document use, numeracy, writing, oral communication, working with others, thinking, digital technology and continuous learning. The program provides the essential skills needed for industry with a focus on worker skills and productivity.

Scaffolding:

This course was developed using curriculum from the Scaffold & Access Industry Association. The purpose of the course is to train individuals on all of the necessary foundation skills required for the scaffold industry including: construction site safety, safe work practices and practical knowledge.

Environmental Monitoring:

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has partnered with the Squamish Nation and developed an eight-week Introduction to Environmental Monitoring course.  Participants obtain the necessary skills and certifications to enter the workforce as a Junior Environmental Monitoring Assistant.

Construction Craft Worker:

This is an introductory course designed to bridge students into an ITA accredited, two-year construction craft worker apprenticeship. It gives the students the basic skills needed for construction sites including safety, basic construction knowledge, and basic tool usage.

Carpentry:

This is an introductory course designed to bridge students into an ITA accredited, four-year carpentry apprenticeship. It gives the students the basic skills needed to start out as a carpenter, including basic tool usage and safety, with a focus on building a future career as a carpenter.

Piping Trades:

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has partnered with the Squamish Nation and developed and designed a 10-week introductory course that prepares students for the piping trades. This course leads to the ITA-accredited piping foundations course and prepares students with the necessary prerequisite skills to ensure their success in the piping trades.

Carpentry Foundations:

This is an ITA Foundations program designed for individuals who do not have prior work experience. The program provides the knowledge and skills needed to enter the workforce as a carpenter. It includes basic carpentry and construction skills, all required safety training, and year one of the ITA apprenticeship training.

Piping Foundations:

This is an ITA Foundations program designed for individuals who do not have prior work experience in the piping trades. The program provides the knowledge and skills needed to enter the workforce and start an apprenticeship as a plumber, steamfitter or sprinkler fitter. It includes basic piping and construction skills, all of the required safety training, and year one of the ITA apprenticeship training.
