Columbia River Treaty

What are Next Steps in the Columbia River Treaty Review?

After the conclusion of the public engagement and First Nations consultation on the strategic decision on whether to terminate, continue or enhance the Columbia River Treaty, the Treaty Review Team will make a recommendation to the provincial Cabinet. Cabinet will then make a decision on the future of the Treaty and provide direction regarding next steps. The Province of British Columbia will also share with Canada the nature of the decision and direction. The Province will then work with Canada to collaborate on a process should there be negotiations with the U.S. If this is the case, draft principle # 13 commits the Province to continue to engage First Nations and Basin communities through the negotiation process.
